Brief Introduction of Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana(KVPY)- 2017

The Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana is a Program started by the Department of Science and Technology, Government Of India in 1999 to encourage students who are studying  Basic Sciences to take up research in Science as a career. The aim of the program is to identify and encourage talented and motivated students to pursue a career in research. This program aims to help the students to realize their potential and to ensure that the best scientific talent is groomed for research and development in the country. Generous fellowship and contingency grant are provided to the selected KVPY Fellows up to the pre Ph.D. level or 5 years whichever is earlier. Summer camps are also organized for the KVPY Fellows in prestigious research and educational institutions in the country.

Eligibility

Kishor Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana Fellowship is given to Indian Students to Study in India only. Students who are enrolled in undergraduate courses, for example, B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./Int. M.S. in Science Subjects such as Chemistry,Physics,Mathematics,Statistics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Cell Biology, Ecology, Molecular Biology, Botany, Zoology, Physiology, Biotechnology, Neurosciences, Bioinformatics, Marine Biology, Geology, Human Biology, Genetics, Biomedical Sciences, Applied Physics, Geophysics, Materials Science or Environmental Science can apply for this fellowship.

Under this Fellowship, Students are divided among 3 streams –

  1. Stream SA: Students who are enrolled in XI Standard(Science) in the Year 2017-2018 and have a minimum of 75% marks  (65% for SC/ST/PWD) in aggregate in MATHEMATICS and SCIENCE in Xth Board Examination. The fellowship of the students selected for this stream only activate if they join an undergraduate course in Basic Sciences (B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./Int. M.S.) in the academic year 2019-20 and have a minimum of 60% marks(50% for SC/ST/PWD) in aggregate in SCIENCE in XIIth/+2 Boards Examination.
  2. Stream SX: Students who are enrolled in XII Standard(Science) in the Year 2017-2018 and have a minimum of 75% marks  (65% for SC/ST/PWD) in aggregate in MATHEMATICS and SCIENCE in Xth Board Examination. The fellowship of the students selected for this stream only activate if they join an undergraduate course in Basic Sciences (B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./Int. M.S.) in the academic year 2018-19 and have a minimum of 60% marks(50% for SC/ST/PWD) in aggregate in SCIENCE in XIIth/+2 Board Examination.
  3. Stream SB: Students who are enrolled in the First Year of an undergraduate program in Basic Sciences in the Year 2017-18 and have a minimum of 60% marks(50% for SC/ST/PWD) in aggregate in SCIENCE in XIIth/+2 Boards Examination. In the first year final exam of Undergraduate Program, they must secure 60% marks(50% for SC/ST/PWD) before taking up the Fellowship, if awarded.

Fellowship Overview

This program offers 2 types of fellowships to Science students:-

  1. SA/SX/SB Streams- during 1st to 3rd years of B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math. / Integrated M.Sc. /M.S., students will be awarded a monthly fellowship of rupees 5000 and additional Annual Contingency Grant of rupees 20,000.
  2. SA/SX/SB Streams- during  M. Sc. / 4th to 5th  years of Integrated M.Sc. /M.S./M.Math./M.Stat, students will be awarded a monthly fellowship of rupees 7000 and additional Annual Contingency Grant of rupees 28,000.

Other privileges Every Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana Fellow will be provided an Identity Card to access National Laboratories/Universities who have agreed to extend privileges like the library, laboratory facilities, etc. to KVPY Fellows on the production of the ID card.

Selection Procedure

There will be two phases in the selection procedure:-

  1. Aptitude Test- An Aptitude test will be conducted on 29 October 2017  at different centres across the country. The test will be conducted in both English and Hindi.
  2. Interview- After the aptitude test, selected students will be called for an Interview.

Important Dates

  1. Opening of Online Application Portal:   9th July 2017.
  2. Last Date for Application Submission:   23rd August 2017.
  3. Test Date:                                                     29th October 2017.
